KAM calls for consumption of locally-manufactured products

19 November 2013, 10:40 Samuel Kisika

Nairobi - The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) have called on citizens to implement the 'Buy Kenya, Build Kenya' initiative to help in the growth of local manufacturing industries.

Joseph Wairiuko, the KAM Principal, said local industries face the challenge of growth because citizens do not consume locally produced products but instead rely much on imports.

"Local industries such as textile are almost experiencing closure challenges because the Buy Kenya, Build Kenya initiative is not put into practice by the citizens," said Wairiuko.

"The government should formulate policies to promote locally produced products and champion the development of sector standards," he added.

Wairiuko also said the government should build local training institutions to raise a large group of young people with industrial skills to fight the growing unemployment and poverty.

He further said the government should enact laws to mitigate the impact of the Mitumba industry, and adopt a local-wear-day to promote and appreciate the contribution of local fabric.

Moreover, Waririuko said high cost of electricity, costly transport and other utilities, and low penetration to the East African Market are some of the challenges facing the local industry. He therefore called for government's immediate intervention for industrial growth.

Waririuko was speaking during the Africa Industrialization Week dubbed 'Job Creation and Entrepreneurship in Development'.
