KAM calls for consumption of locally-manufactured products

Nairobi - The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) have called on
citizens to implement the 'Buy Kenya, Build Kenya' initiative to help in
the growth of local manufacturing industries.
the KAM Principal, said local industries face the challenge of growth
because citizens do not consume locally produced products but instead rely much on imports.
"Local industries such as textile are
almost experiencing closure challenges because the Buy Kenya, Build
Kenya initiative is not put into practice by the citizens," said

promote locally produced products and champion the
development of sector standards," he added.
Wairiuko also said
the government should build local training institutions to raise a large
group of young people with industrial skills to fight the growing
unemployment and poverty.
He further said the government should
enact laws to mitigate the impact of the Mitumba industry, and adopt a
local-wear-day to promote and appreciate the contribution of local
Moreover, Waririuko said high cost of electricity, costly
transport and other utilities, and low penetration to the East African
Market are some of the challenges facing the local industry. He therefore
called for government's immediate intervention for industrial growth.
Waririuko was speaking during the Africa Industrialization Week dubbed 'Job Creation and Entrepreneurship in Development'.
