Judge rescinds decision to increase Nairobi parking charges

Nairobi - Judge Isaac Lenaola had okayed the decision by the Nairobi County government to increase the charges from the current KES 140 to KES 300 Wednesday.
But in a ruling Thursday, he suspended the charges saying that it was prudent an appeal by matatu owners be heard before making a ruling on the case.
26 matatu saccos had gone to court to protest the parking charges and other ones which had been gazetted by the county government.
They argued that they had paid long term charges which will expire at the end of the year and thus the ruling to have the new charges take effect immediately was faulty.
Jude Lenaola agreed that it was a matter of principle to have their appeal to the charges heard first before giving the new charges the go ahead.
He had said the previous day in his ruling to brush aside the arguments of the saccos that they had no real grounds of stopping the enactment of the proposed legislation further.
