Jubilee asks CORD to address issues in Parliament, Senate

03 June 2014, 17:31 William Korir

Nairobi - The Jubilee coalition has rebuffed the CORD coalition's plea for dialogue on Saba Saba day next month, instead telling them to use constitutionally mechanisms to deal with the issues they have with government.

In a parliamentary group meeting chaired by president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto Tuesday, the coalition agreed to channel the plea by the CORD coalition for dialogue over troubling national issues.

It was agreed that the majority of issues, especially those to do with legislation, like CORDs move to disband the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision IEBC be passed through Senate.

But it was overwhelmingly agreed that the proposed Saba Saba day dialogue between the two coalitions be given a wide berth.

" We have agreed that there is no dialogue unless prescribed by the constitution, Majority leader in the national assembly Aden Duale said.

" The feeling is that some of the issues can be dealt with in ways that are available constitutionally, like in parliament and the senate and thus we ask the opposition to explore those, he added.

President Kenyatta, during his Madaraka Day speech had said that he was open to dialogue over national issues but said he would not allow a coalition government with the opposition.

His deputy Ruto on the other hand had told the opposition to wait for the 2017 General Elections to seek change in leadership.

Duale though did not rule out dialogue, asking CORD leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula to be free to visit State House for a meeting with the president.

" The president has extended his hand out to the opposition to have talks with him at State House but as said, there is a constitutional way of handling such issues, he added.

CORD leaders have pledged to pressure the government into making drastic changes into the way they have handled issues such as terrorism, insecurity and corruption.
