Journalist records statement over death threats

13 August 2014, 19:32

Siaya - A journalist playing his trade in the county has recorded a statement with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after receiving death threats from individuals he allegedly mentioned in a story that was published by a local daily newspaper.

Isaiah Gwengi who is a reporter with the standard newspaper recorded the statement at the CID offices in Bondo after receiving continuous threats after exposing sexual abuse of female inmates by the police at Usenge police station.

The visibly shaken Gwengi said some of the senior security personnel from the area have been trailing him during his assignments and even sending people to his residence to threaten him over the story.

He further disclosed that his source who leaked him information on what has been transpiring at the station has also been threatened with death and appealed to the area CID to provide them with protection.

The area D.C.I.O, Aggrey Abwogi stated that his office will launch investigations into the matter and assured Gwengi of adequate protection.

The story which was published in the Standard Newspaper on Thursday last week implicated senior police officers at Usenge police station on allegations of sexual abuse and perpetual police harassment of innocent civilians in the area.
