Nyeri - An inmate at King’ong’o GK prison in Nyeri has killed his colleague over KES 70 000 that they obtained fraudulently from unsuspecting members of the public.
According to Nyeri Central OCPD, Charles Rotich, the inmates engaged in a dispute over how the money should be shared.
Rotich said the duo was part of a cartel in the prison that was swindling members of the public out of money via MPESA.
“It was at 4.00am today when we got reports that an inmate has killed his colleague following a quarrel on how they should share some money. The alleged killer hit his friend on the head using a hammer and he died instantly,” said Rotich.

He added that the suspect was serving a death sentence for robbery with violence while the deceased was serving 15 years for rape.
Rotich, who declined to disclose names of the duo, however said police have launched investigations into the matter.
The body was removed to Nyeri referral Hospital.
Efforts to obtain comments from the prison authorities were futile as journalists were denied entry into the facility by armed wardens.
