A man who has been impersonating a senior National Security Intelligence Services (NSIS) Officer in Nyando District- Kisumu County has been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment.
Solomon Obiero Odero was arrested on February 1 at Awasi District Civil Registrar of Births and Deaths offices where he had gone to seek services.
In his defense, Obiero said he posed as a top NSIS officer in order to fast track the processing of his daughter’s birth certificate.
He said he was frustrated by the ‘never ending delay’ at the registration offices.
However, Nyando Resident Magistrate P.M. Wechuli ordered that the suspect be consigned to serve his term at Kodiaga G.K Prison for the offense to act as a deterrent measure to the rest.
Wechuli delivered the ruling after hearing a series of witnesses among them the area OCPD Elias Gitonga and Awasi Civil Registrar of Births and Deaths officer.
Nyando OCPD Elias Gitonga narrated to the court how the suspicious registration officers promptly alerted the police who interrogated and arrested the imposter.
He divulged to the court that they are still pursuing the imposter’s other accomplices who have been involved in several incidents of conning unsuspecting members of the public in the pretext of assisting them access government services.
Following the incident, Gitonga warned members of the public and government officers to liaise closely with security agents to quickly nab such criminals before they succeed with their ill motives.
He commended the public for cooperating with police in tracking down such criminals unlike in the past when they kept aloof, opting not to report such suspects because they were either related or feared coming to court as witnesses.
