Mombasa - A senior immigration officer has been charged with fraud in Mombasa.
The court heard that on April 15, at the Moi International Airport Alfred Onyango renewed and approved a visa of Ismail Didi who is being held at Shimo la Tewa prison for being unlawfully present in Kenya.
Onyango allegedly processed Didi's Visa to authorize him to be in the country while under detention at the Shimo la Tewa prison, something he knew was against the immigration laws of Kenya.
Onyango was employed by the public service commission as a senior immigration officer when he committed the offense.
Onyango is also facing a second count of conspiring to commit a felony. It is alleged that on April 22, within Mombasa county, he conspired with Didi to commit a felony by issuing him with a visa in a manner that was against the immigration procedures.
He however denied the charges before senior magistrate Richard Odenyo.
Earlier, Odenyo had issued a warrant of arrest against Onyango who had disappeared after learning that the police were looking for him.
The state prosecutor, Peter Kiprop prayed the court not to release Onyango on bail until the case is heard and determined saying that he might abscond the court proceedings.
Magistrate Richard Odenyo ordered Onyango to be held in custody until June 25 when he is expected to give a ruling on his application to be released on bond.
