If political parties were like media

15 February 2012, 15:06 Alex Welemba

I wish all political parties could be like the media groups and communication companies..

It is very difficult to find MPS from PNU and ODM or any other party putting their differences in politics away and coming together to help people of Kenya the way media and communication companies did.

I like the way Nation Media Group, Standard Group and Royal Media Service Group put aside their differences and came up in one accord to help Kenyans who were suffering from hunger.

They are competitors in business but in helping Kenyans they are one because they are Kenyans.

When you see how journalism interacts; like the way Julie Gichuru of Citizen TV and Jeff Koinange of K24 chat  in front of cameras to show unit in their jobs.

Kenyans for Kenya opened our eyes to show how Kenyans love each other and how they are willing to help each other despite their differences in tribalism, ethics and customs.

The media provided free advertisement for Kenyans for Kenya. Thanks to Kenya media owners, they showed the world how to help others.

Without forgetting the communication companies, Safaricom, Airtel, Orange and Yu who put aside their differences in business and help Kenya.

I can remember when I got free smses from Safaricom informing me on how I can help.

Safaricom removed M-Pesa charges when sending money to Kenyans for Kenya, and they decided to work together with Airtel so that they can help out.

I wonder where our politicians were. They only think on everything that benefits them and their families. I did not hear any political party coming up and announcing that they have given out any amount of money to support a Kenyan who was suffering from the hunger. They refuse to pay taxes and increase their salaries.

I remember the time Prime Minister paid his taxes. Some Mps from Rift Valley said he has betrayed them because he paid tax.

The problem of Kenyan Mps is that they don’t think about Kenya. I am waiting to see if any politician will come up and say he/she is going to give his salary to Kenyans for Kenya.

A policeman sacrificed his salary so that it could go to Kenyans for Kenya initiative.

I urge the politicians to realize their position in society and that they should be responsible for all that happens that affects Kenya.
