IEBC to announce date for Meru by-elections

Nairobi - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will conduct by-elections for Meru governor and Maua County Assembly Ward on the same day.
Earlier on, the IEBC had set the by-elections for Maua Ward as 29 April, 2014.
“The by-election for Maua County Assembly Ward, which was to be conducted at the same time with the Othaya Member of National Assembly by-election on 29th April, 2014, will now be held on the same date as that of Meru governor by-election,” IEBC said in a statement.
The commission said it had decided to hold the two by-elections on the same day to save on costs.
“This is because it is logistically convenient and cheaper to combine elections being undertaken in the same region,” said the IEBC adding that the date for the two by-elections will be announced in due course.
The Maua seat fell vacant following the death of Abednego Miitine, who died in a road accident, whereas the Meru governor post fell vacant after the Court of Appeal nullified his election on Wednesday.
