IEBC stands tall amidst calls for its disbandment
26 June 2014, 18:13
Nairobi - The clamor for disbandment of the electoral body (IEBC) by opposition coalition CORD got a blow when Commonwealth member states appointed the IEBC chairman, Isaac Hassan to chair its Electoral Network Secretariat for the next two years.
In their own opinion, commonwealth delegates were convinced that IEBC, under the chairmanship of Hassan, conducted a free, fair, transparent and credible election in 2013.
The move by the commonwealth delegates to endorse Hassan has added voice in the raging debate on whether the IEBC should be disbanded, as requested by the opposition.
Commonwealth has 53 member states from Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and the Pacific. The process of removing the commissioners and disbandment of an election body is constitutional.
The Kenyan constitution and other Acts of Parliament provide the procedure for removal of a commissioner on grounds of integrity contravention.
Legal and political experts are keeping a keen eye on the trends on the clamor for the overhaul of IEBC and CORD is doing their oversight role on the electoral management.
