IEBC sets date for Othaya by-elections

Nairobi - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Monday announced that Othaya Member of National Assembly by-elections will be held on 29 April, 2014.
On Friday last week, the IEBC confirmed that it had received received the certificate of nullification of the election of Othaya Member of Parliament Mary Wambui from the Court of Appeal sitting in Nyeri in Compliance with Section 86 (1) of the Elections Act, 2011.
Political parties were asked to submit their nominees by 27 March in readiness for the polls.
The seat fell vacant following the nullification of Wambui’s election by the Court of Appeal on grounds that the elections were not conducted in accordance with the law.
The High Court had earlier on dismissed a petition that had been filed by Peter Gichuki King’ara, who vied for the seat in last year’s polls but lost to Wambui.
His petition was dismissed on grounds that he did not furnish the court with sufficient evidence to justify his claims a move that prompted him to move to the Court of Appeal.
Wambui has vowed to defend her seat in the by-elections under a TNA ticket.
