IEBC set to confirm Kuria as Gatundu South MP

04 August 2014, 18:15 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision IEBC has confirmed that it will deliberate on Moses Kuria's candidacy in the Gatundu South by election Tuesday.

Kuria is set to be named MP after the last of his opponents Joachim Kiamere quit the race on Friday.

According to the IEBC, they have received a written withdrawal from Kiamere and will meet Tuesday to decide on the way forward.

" We have received the withdrawal notice of Mr. Joachim Kiarie Kamere from the Gatundu South By-election. The Commission meets tomorrow morning to decide on the same, a statement from the IEBC read.

Kiamere said he had decided to withdraw from the race to avoid causing political divisions in Gatundu South, which is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard.

“Political contents can be acrimonious and can cause huge rifts and polarization in the community. Gatundu South Constituency is the home of our beloved President Uhuru Kenyatta. I don’t wish to be the cause or be associated with political divisions and unnecessary tension in the President’s backyard,” he said.

He said Gatundu people must give the President peace of mind in order for him to focus the onerous task of serving the people of Kenya.

“I am sure that many of my friends and supporters will feel disappointed and let down. But, it is important sometimes to step away from a tree in front of you in order to behold the forest,” Kiamere added.

Kiamere was to contest on a New Democrats Party ticket.
