IEBC cancels Gatundu South by election, Kuria to be named MP

05 August 2014, 17:15 William Korir

Nairobi - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision IEBC has cancelled the Gatundu South by election.

This follows the late withdrawal from the race by Joachim Kiamere, leaving Moses Kuria the lone candidate.

The election was to be held Thursday August 7, 2014 but since there are no other contesting candidates, the election has been declared null.

The commission will now name Kuria MP in the coming days.

The move followed a top brass meeting occasioned by received a written withdrawal from Kiamere on Monday.

" We have received the withdrawal notice of Mr. Joachim Kiarie Kamere from the Gatundu South By-election. The Commission meets tomorrow morning to decide on the same, a statement from the IEBC read.

Kiamere said he had decided to withdraw from the race to avoid causing political divisions in Gatundu South, which is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard.

" Political contents can be acrimonious and can cause huge rifts and polarization in the community. Gatundu South Constituency is the home of our beloved President Uhuru Kenyatta. I don’t wish to be the cause or be associated with political divisions and unnecessary tension in the President’s backyard,” he said.

He said Gatundu people must give the President peace of mind in order for him to focus the onerous task of serving the people of Kenya.

" I am sure that many of my friends and supporters will feel disappointed and let down. But, it is important sometimes to step away from a tree in front of you in order to behold the forest, Kiamere added.
