ID tags for boda boda operators

12 July 2013, 11:34 Steve Wambugu

The National Chairman of Boda boda Association Simon Nundu has said all members will be issued with union identification cards to curb imposters.

Nundu observed that many people have been masquerading as boda boda operators in order to rob customers at night.

“This is a step to fight pretenders in this industry and that is why we have started issuing these identification cards,” he said.

Speaking with the media on Friday morning, the chairman said that they are also working closely with the police in the County to ensure lawbreakers are apprehended.

He added that they took these drastic measures following several complaints from the public that boda boda riders were robbing them at night.

“As part of making sure we bring to book those misusing the boda boda industry, we have teamed up with police department in the area,” he said.

He further cautioned that any boda boda rider who will be found without the identification tag from the union will be penalized as a way to instill discipline among members.

Nundu noted that so far, 10 500 identification cards have been issued to members this year alone in Nakuru town.

He further pointed that plans are under way to implement the project in other Counties before the of this year.

“We are issuing these cards gradually because it’s a process; we have to verify members’ credentials before handing them the tags,” he remarked.
