18 September 2015, 08:23 Joseph Njung'eh

Nairobi - Hundreds of youths in Nyeri County have been turned away from Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment centers for being underweight.

The County recruiting officer, Liutenant Colonel Solomon Menye has said 50 percent of prospective candidates in the region were disqualified at initial stages.

He said majority do not fulfill the required minimum weight of 54.55 kilograms for men and 50 kilograms for women.

The young men and women are between the age of 18 and 26 years old with high number been secondary School leavers.

“I do not know why majority of youths in this region have not attained the minimum weights that we require. We have disqualified hundreds of them over weight qualification,” said Menye during a recruitment exercise at Ruring’u stadium in Nyeri town.

In the centre only six candidates were recruited, all men, with Menye explaining that there was no slot for female candidates in the Sub-County.

The Kenya Defence Forces is conducting a national exercise of recruiting servicemen and women, constabularies and tradesmen and women.
