Human rights activist in court over fraud

A Human rights activist in Mt Kenya region has been arraigned in court charged with six counts of obtaining money by false pretense.
Before Nanyuki Senior resident magistrate V.K Kiptoon was Christopher Mwai charged with obtained money by false pretense from six different people at Mathaithi Township, Kangari, in Murang’a County.
In the first count, he was charged that jointly with others not before court he pretended that he was in a position to sell the complainant's parcel of land at Gitaraga farm limited in Nanyuki, something they all knew was impossible.
The court further heard that on diverse dates between January 2012 and February 2013, he obtained over KES 170 000 from Martha Waithera, Alphard Karangu, Elijah Ng’ang’a, Isaac Karuga, Peter Njuguna and Karunye Kamunye.
Mwai pleaded not guilty of the six counts and was released on a KES 200 000 bond with a surety of similar amount.
The case will be heard on May 20.
