How to get past failure: Quit beating yourself up
15 September 2015, 12:03
Whether you like it or not, accept it or deny it, all your days won’t be so uplifting, lucky or made up of happy moments. Some days will not turn out as you hope for. That does not make you a failure; it ought to make you a winner.
I know many people who have failed to wake up when they stumble just because they won’t accept they failed. Getting stuck in failure drags you down and prevents you from moving forward. In the past, I beat myself down for mistakes I made. This would go on for days and weeks, sometimes months. In the end, I would realize how much time I had wasted yet I could not recover it. A colleague shared these valuable tips that have changed my life, and I hope they change yours too:
Always remember that if you want to do something of value in life, you are bound to stumble. Over the decades, many of the most successful people stumbled once, or twice or many times. If you are pursuing something that really matters and that will make an impact, you will make mistakes here and there, in an attempt to perfect it. You need to realize that failure serves to make you better, not pull you down. And hence, the earlier you accept you have made a mistake, the earlier you charge to rectify it and achieve your goal.

Believe in yourself. Believing in your capabilities will keep you from falling into a pit of negativity and help you to be more constructive with your time and energy. Sometimes when we fail, we tend to doubt our abilities and steep into a negative train of thought. Train your mind to hold a high self-value so that when you stumble, you believe that you will get past the failure and emerge a victor. A simple rule is to silence your inner critic that tells you that you might fail again. While at it, shun any person who tries to convince you that you cannot do it, keep focus.
Start with one small step forward. Armed with the right mindset, take action. Take small baby steps towards correcting your mistake. Each day, strive to take a step, albeit small- it will make a big difference in the end. An adage in my community states that nothing is as hard as something that is yet to be started. In simpler terms, many things seem hard because we fail to garner the courage to start working on them. The point here is to start small and at whatever pace, as long as you are moving forward.
