How to accelerate your career growth
11 June 2015, 11:03
We err when we assume career growth is determined by how many years we have worked or how many employers/ companies we have worked for.
In essence, career growth can be propelled by all or some of the following:
1: Sharpen your axe always
Your area of expertise is evolving daily. Remaining static with the former skills is rendering yourself obsolete. To be relevant, keenly identify what keeps you abreast with the rest of the world. Know which courses, training or classes to take to keep yourself sharp daily. Commit to go the extra mile in sharpening yourself. It may be costly or time demanding but it is worth the sacrifice. Promotion will come looking for you! New opportunities will knock on your door more frequently than you have ever imagined. Simply start sharpening yourself now.
2: Competition is healthy
If you are the best in your current position, job or group please start looking for a different place. Being the best always is not only toxic but will kill your career. You are simply taking a 'stagnation, career-killing pill' slowly by staying in a competition-free environment. "As a iron sharpens iron, so does man," Proverbs 27:17. Ensure you are in a competitive environment. Measure yourself against others that are better than you. Be willing to take challenge from colleagues positively. Competition is essential for your career growth; look for it and go for it always.

3: Mentors are makers
Career like any other line of life has people who have gone ahead of you. Seek to establish who else went through the path you wish to take and has succeeded. Such a person will be your motivation, a reliable path pointer and a stable stepping stone for you to move up the staircase of your career without struggle.
4: Exposure is precious
You will be what you envision. You will envision what you have a idea of. You will have ideas directly proportional to your exposure. To grow your career, decide to move far and wide to know what the other side of the world has in your line of career. Make a decision to read materials that are relevant to your career. Watch or listen to materials that make you grow.
Wishing you acceleration in your career growth!
