How safe is Brazil to host the world cup?

04 April 2013, 14:09 Rahab Gitau

Brazil has been put on spotlight after a gang rape involving a woman from the United States and her male companion were attacked.

The woman had been raped and the man beaten and handcuffed.

Another woman came to public limelight with similar allegations claiming she had been raped two weeks earlier and had experienced a lot of difficulties reporting the matter to the police as she had to wait for 3 hours to get assistance.

Many Brazilians interviewed in Sao Paolo said that they did not feel safe going out late to places such as restaurants or shopping malls.

Currently, the third suspect has been arrested.

At the police station, two officers were dismissed and charged with slow response to calls to assist the public.

Due to these insecurity issues, how will Brazil convince the world that Rio is a safe place to host the world cup as it also plans to host the Olympic Games in 2016?

Despite the high record of insecurity allegations, Brazil has in the recent past done a lot to enhance security.

First, Brazil has increased deployment of police officers within and also outside the city centers and they have also improved their crime record.

It is also good to point out that according to the World Economic Forum, Brazil was the top country in upward evolution of competitiveness in 2009 gaining eight positions among other countries, overcoming Russia for the first time and partially closing the competitiveness gap with India and China which are among the BRIC economies.

Despite the challenges ahead, Brazil remains to be the host country for the 2014 world cup and also the Olympic Games which will boost their economy on one hand and also open the country up for public scrutiny.
