Housewife confronts gunman, recovers rifle

30 June 2015, 15:55 Arap Yego

Bungoma - A woman from a village at the border between Mt Elgon and Sirisia Constituencies in Bungoma County has risen to near celebrity status after she overpowered gunmen and recovered an AK 47 rifle from one of them.

Police said the 32-year-old woman Mary Cherotich over the weekend fought off a gunman who stormed into her house demanding cash after her husband fled when they struck.

“She was cooking in the house when the robbers struck. One of the suspects who was armed with a gun entered the kitchen and threatened to kill her if she did not hand over all the money she had to him,” explained a police officer who requested anonymity.

“She decided to fight the gunman and grabbed his weapon. When the suspect realized he had been overpowered, he fled leaving his weapon behind. His two accomplices who were keeping vigil outside melted into darkness too,” he added.

Muhamud Ndiwa, the area Nyumbi Kumi Chairperson who was among the first people to heed to the woman’s alarm,  told journalists that they were shocked to find their neighbour with the abandoned weapon.

“I was the first person to rush to the compound and found the brave woman who was unshaken after the incident with the AK 47 assault rifle. Her courage baffled us because even her husband, a primary school teacher took off when the thugs struck,” said Ndiwa.

Cheptais Deputy County Commissioner, Omar Salat confirmed the incident and praised the woman for her extra-ordinary courage of standing up.

He said the recovery of the weapon is a major victory in the war against crime in the region, which in the recent past has witnessed a surge of gun related criminal cases.

“We have the weapon which was recovered in our possession and security agents have launched a manhunt for the suspects,” Salat told News24.
