Twenty seven interns from Kenya Medical Training College - Homabay narrowly escaped death after their hostel was razed down in Migori.
The students who were attached to Migori District Hospital were not in the hostel when the fire started.
Despite no life being lost as the no student was in when the men hostel started burning no property was salved from the tongues of the raging inferno. The cause of the fire is yet to be established as the officials from Kenya Power, the hospital and police investigation unit were set to hold a meeting on Thursday to try and unveil the root cause of the fire.
The acting Migori DC John Fedha who addressed the affected students promised that prompt investigation was going to be done to unravel the cause of fire and the value of property destroyed.
Elsewhere the government is planning to build a multi-million sugar industry in Rongo District. The firm which is going to be located at Ndege Oriedo is going to occupy 124.8 Ha. of land out of which only 20ha are remaining.
The sugar industry is the third one to be established in the region in a period of three years.
Others are Sukari Industries in Ndhiwa and Transmara Sugar co. Ltd which broke the monopoly that was innitially enjoyed by Sony Sugar. Entrance of the forth company is likely to cause more ripples in the market which is already experiencing cut throat competition for canes among the existing companies.
