A rogue hippopotamus killed a 52 year-old-man on Thursday morning at Ngare Ng’iro village in Laikipia East district.
Segera location Chief Njagi Kariuki told the media that Jackson Macharia had gone to scare away the animal from his shamba at around 3AM when he was attacked.
Kariuki said that the father of two died on the way to Nanyuki District Hospital.
The administrator also said that the hippopotamus came from the nearby Ngare Ng’iro river and attacked the man.
Contacted, Kenya Wildlife Service senior warden in charge of Laikipia County Dickson Too said that his officers were on the ground monitoring and tracking the animal.
“I want to assure the residents that my officers are steadfastly tracking the animal,” Too said.
In his inaugural speech on Wednesday, Laikipia county governor Joshua Irungu Wakahora noted that the county has for a long time experienced human-wildlife conflict and assured that his Government will work together with KWS to enhance peaceful co-existence among communities and wildlife.
He said that conservation of wildlife must go hand in hand in ensuring justice for families and victims affected.
