High school students charged with drunkenness

15 March 2013, 18:06 Wangui Joseph

A 17-year-old girl was among five people on Friday charged with breach of public peace for being drunk and disorderly in a Nyeri magistrate court.

Benson Wambugu, Duncan Muriithi, John Kagondu, Philip Wanjohi and Catherine Warukira were charged that on March 13 this year at Nyeri town were found strandering and shouting due to drunkenness.

They all admitted to the charges.

Warukira informed court that she was a form three student at Chinga Girls Secondary school in Othaya.

However, Senior Resident Magistrate Joan Wambliyanga directed that she be remanded at minors’ custody for there was nobody in court to confirm her assertions.

She also directed District probation officer to investigate the matter and come up with a report.

The case was slated to proceed once the report is ready.

Her counter part John Kagondu mitigated himself that his single parent is disabled and he was the only one looking after her.

He informed court that he was the eldest son and his siblings look upon him for all their needs.

He claimed that they were all in school and he is the sole bread winner for the family.

However, the four were all subjected to a fine of KES 500.
