Growth of technical schools should be encouraged

22 February 2013, 16:50Wangui Joseph

Upgrading of some colleges to universities will bring growth opportunities to the country and communities surrounding the institutions.

Roy Mugiira, Senior assistant Director of research in the Ministry of Higher Education said on Friday said the charters are offered due to soaring demand for higher education in some regions.

“Though they are allowed to offer university education, the institutions will still maintain their status in providing technical training.

They have just expanded their education mandate but technical courses will not be abolished,” noted Mugiira.

He said higher education systems partially differ from crafts and handwork courses offered at technical schools.

Mugiira observed that most of theses colleges have a primary mandate of offering handwork courses despite diversity in theoretical courses.

He was addressing people in an exhibition which had in-attendance 11 institutions from Mount Kenya region who had gone to showcase their creativity potential in artwork and innovation.

It was organized by Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI), a body that facilitates exchange of experience, ideas and technological advancement among technical colleges.

Mugiira however called for cooperation from manufacturers, stakeholders, consumers and the government in the campaign to help reduce electronic waste.

He argued that some electronic tools have recyclable components which can be dissembled from the tool and benefit individuals in another way.

“By dissembling an electronic tool, you will recover some usable components like iron and metal which are usable if recycled,” said the researcher.

Mugiira said E-waste has to be guided by a legal framework guiding all stakeholders and be environmental sustainability.

He further disclosed that National Environmental Management Association (NEMA) is developing an Act specifying how electronic waste like mobile phones and computers can be managed.
