Group campaigns against stripping of women

A group of women in Nyeri have launched a campaign against stripping, undressing and violation of women and girls rights.
The movement was formed following a recent incident where a young lady was stripped naked by town idlers and touts at a matatu stage in Nyeri town.
A crowd of rowdy young men descended on the middle aged woman claiming that she was indecently dressed. She was totally undressed without a chance to defend herself, leaving her with the birthday suit.
The victim was rushed to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital where she was admitted for four days to absorb the shock.
Led by a former nominated councilor Elizabeth Muthoni, the movement is demanding arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
“The Police Chief David Kimayo should ensure the culprits of the heinous act are arrested,” Muthoni said irritably.
Speaking at Baden Powell hall in Nyeri town on Monday, Muthoni condemned the act saying it was a high level of impunity and must be addressed.
They further demanded an apology from media presenters who aired the issue on TV.
“We demand apology from presenters of KTN who presented the issue as a flippant laughable matter hence ignoring the human dignity of the victim,” they added.
Muthoni further called upon Kenyans and leaders to preach respect for human rights and dignity of all.
“Women’s freedom should not and cannot be curtailed to serve egoistic ends,” she stated.
