Nakuru - Eleven people perished Thursday morning in a grisly road accident that involved a PSV matatu and a trailer near Makutano junction along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
According to the Provincial Traffic Enforcement Officer (PTEO), Mary Omari, the accident occurred after the trailer ferrying iron rods and headed to Malaba lost control, colliding head-on with a PSV Matatu en route to Nairobi.
A completely wrecked matatu was a clear evidence of the impact, where 10 passengers aboard and their driver died on the spot, with the only survivor being taken to the Nakuru’s Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital.
“It appears that the trailer driver was asleep as he lost control in the wrong lane, before hitting an oncoming matatu headed for Nakuru hence the impact,” said Mary Omari who spoke to the media at the scene of the accident.
The incidence occurred just a day before millions of Kenyans break for Easter holiday, with Omari warning drivers of public service vehicles, private vehicles and the long distance trucks to be careful.
“We are appealing to the road users and especially those in charge of vehicles on our roads to be vigilant on our busy roads as Kenyans break for Easter holiday,” appealed Omari.
