Granny, 88, drowns in a well

15 March 2013, 16:51Wangui Joseph

A solemn mood has engulfed Kiawamururu village in Mukurwe-ini Constituency after a 88-year-old grandmother drowned in an abandoned well.

It was not clear how she met her death since the well was about 500 meters from her homestead.

“We woke up yesterday morning to find our grandmother missing. At around 6 pm, we received a phone call from one of our neighbors who said that someone had drowned in a well,” Said David Weru a grandchild of the deceased. On receiving the news, the family notified the area chief who in turn called the police. They however came today morning to retrieve the body since it was not possible to do so at night,” added a distraught Weru.

Another relative to the deceased Margaret Karanja said the grandmother was in good health and that she had not differed with anyone before her death.

“We don’t even know where she got the idea to go to the well since it is three farms away from hers,” Karanja said.

Other villagers ruled out the possibility of suicide saying that it was unlikely for her to commit suicide by drowning.

“It’s unlikely for her to have committed suicide. Her age is too advanced for that. At this age, she is likely for her to refuse eating and die but not kill herself through drowning," the villager who refused to be identified said.

Police took the body to Mukurwe-ini District hospital mortuary with area OCPD Adiel Nyange confirmed investigations have already commenced.
