Govt urged to budget for Nyumba Kumi initiative

Mombasa - Likoni Community Development Program (LICODEP) leaders have asked the government to have the Nyumba Kumi security program included in the coming financial year’s budget.
The organization's leadership has challenged the government to view the challenges involved in the program to being brought about by financial problems as leaders in such organizations need funding.
Speaking to the media in their offices, the LICODEP chairman, Abdullah Mwazecha said the Nyumba Kumi program is supposed to be reinforced by village elders who will have sacrificed their time that would be used for bread seeking in other areas.
He said that the only way of having the program succeed is have the village elders in the government's payroll for them to emerge with full force into ensuring the regulations set by the government over the program are followed in full swing.
“It is impossible for a father to see his children starve because he has dedicated his whole time to ensuring the security of other people is guaranteed," said Mwazecha.
The organization chairman said that failure by the government to fund the program has forced people to avoid taking responsibility over the programme, leaving the positions to goons who will start humiliating residents.
It's just a few months since the Bombolulu - Kisimani community policing organization raised alarm over dangerous people being made heads of the Nyumba Kumi initiative in Bamburi, Bombolulu and Vijiweni in Kisauni sub-County.
LICODEP request comes amid the looming security fears in Likoni since the March church shooting.
