Nyakach District Commissioner Joseph Magoha has disclosed that the Government has prioritized re-alignment of Rivers Nyando, Awach, Asawo and Miriu alongside construction of dykes as a long term flood mitigation measure.
Magoha also called for the protection of the river banks through planting of trees to minimize the loss of top alluvial soil attributed to the raging perennial floods.
Speaking at Kogola Primary School, the DC expressed optimism that flood mitigation in Nyakach, Nyando and Muhoroni will be taken up as a priority by Kisumu County Government.
On insecurity, the administrator said the recent incident in which a young man had his private part chopped off completely sent shock waves and served as a wakeup call to local security agents in the area but urged local residents to liaise closely with the police to curb the menace.
He also emphasized on the need for ensuring food security now that the raging floods left devastating effects after sweeping away all the food crops and animals, thus compounded poverty in Nyakach.
The administrator also called for higher child enrollment and retention in schools asking parents to play their rightful role even as the Central Government and County Governments works towards improving the standards of education at all levels.
