Bungoma - All Bungoma County residents who own internet-enabled devices will soon enjoy free WiFi, Governor Kenneth Lusaka has said.
The local county government on Thursday launched the first phase of the free WiFi infrastructure which is offered by Telkom Kenya. It will cover the county headquarters in Bungoma and the town.
Speaking during the launch, Lusaka said the second phase of the project will cover the entire sub-county headquarters town and the adjacent areas.
“We are committed to ensuring that most of our county residents enjoy free internet in partnership with Telkom Kenya. We will cascade to the wards and introduce the hotspots after we are through with the sub-counties,” said the Governor.

Lusaka asked county government employees to embrace the use of internet and social media for them to offer better services to members of the public.
“I expect all the county government workers to be IT-savvy. Our government workers cannot afford at this time and age not to be on social media like Facebook or Twitter. Through the online forums they can get crucial feedback on the services they render to the public,” said the Governor.
He added that young people should make use of the free internet to create jobs for themselves and also do academic research.
