Aspirant calls for carbon trading

25 December 2012, 11:45 Wangui Joseph

Nyeri county Governor seat aspirant Wachira Keen has said Government should initiate carbon trading programme as way of curbing unemployment among youths.

Keen said in some countries young people are paid after planting trees and taking care of them.

Addressing an agricultural stakeholders’ forum in Nyeri today Wachira said Water users associations and environment conservation organizations should be given support and collaborate with the community.

He stated that sustaining nature is giving life to human and animals. “You can survive in many areas but in nature you have to work. It is unforgiving, once destroyed it will slowly kill you”, Wachira said.

The 40 stakeholders were discussing on increment of citizen engagement in natural resources management hosted by Grassroots Development Initiatives Foundation-GRADIF Kenya.

Wachira said it is an individual responsibility to put in place measures that conserve environment even in farming activities.

“Do not be part of environment destruction,” Wachira advised adding that a strong campaign should be enhanced in mobilizing people and urging them to plant more trees.

He also supposed for harnessing of solar energy and make use of it to save water. “Most developed countries use solar energy instead of water power which is more cost saving”.

In Nyeri county, poverty has resulted to degradation and overexploitation of natural resources due to small farm holdings resulting to low  land productivity, human-wildlife conflict and population pressure.

According to GRADIF-Kenya, natural resources conservation and management by state administration has largely failed because of locals’ reliance on these resources for their livelihoods has not effectively been taken into account.

The aspirant called for awareness creation to community on how to keep water sources safe and formation of strengthened Water Resources Users Associations (WRUAs).

“Tree planting exercise should commence across our county and construction of water conservation structures,” Wachira proposed.
