Governor Mutua might be the leader we have long awaited

21 November 2013, 13:03 Mubweka Orodi

The man is close to being unmatched in his credentials and experience by his peers. He has previously served oversees as a lecturer and only came to Kenya upon being appointed as the first government spokesperson by the former head of state, Mwai Kibaki.

At 44 years of age, he is among the youngest governors in the council of governors and still emerges as the most hardworking and dedicated of them all. With a PhD in Communication from the University of South Western Sydney, the slim, medium built governor is clearly a man who cares about his image and the image of his jurisdiction and people.

Ever since his ascending to power, the young governor has consistently walked his campaign talk and strived to make an impact within the first few months. Machakos town is currently among the cleanest towns in Kenya and East Africa. With a population of roughly over 1 million, the newly branded city of Machakos has been swept clean with liter bins being positioned strategically around town. This move has benefited the County as the President visited the area a week ago to officially elevate the town to a city.

A bone of contention has been ripe between the governors and the central government over allocation of funds to the counties. Most governors have persistently complained that the money sent to their counties is not sufficient. One man though who has not been in the limelight not to complain but rather to assure the public of his commitment is the governor of Machakos. Dr. Mutua, as he is famously known, received his share of the County revenue and quickly embarked on a mission to transform the County as he had earlier promised during his campaigns.

A first time politician and the urge to indulge in the politics of the day don’t seem to augur well for him. Having served as Public Communications secretary, Dr. Mutua was obviously surrounded by numerous political figures, bombarded with plenty of information that could make or break careers and overwhelmed by the kind of lives that politicians lead. Through all these, the slim-built young governor has stayed true to his word even after being elected as governor. It seems the life that he saw other politicians lead as he diligently served the president and the country at large did not faze him a single bit.

Fast forward to date and the Konza city is yet to kick start. All preparations are in place but the project just hasn’t started yet. With the techno city being a first of its kind and a vision 2030 project, the government has lagged behind in its implementation yet the remaining time is barely enough to properly construct a town the size of Nakuru. Dr. Mutua however has not pegged his hopes entirely on the Central government but has rather gone ahead and connected with some of his contacts in the Arab world and European as well as American continents with whom he previously had close relations before landing a spot at the communications department in the government.

Dr. Mutua has gone to the lengths of wooing investors who had previously set sights on Konza techno city such as Nairobi hospital and JKUAT. Other foreign investors who had hopes in Konza city have been lured into the Machakos city, thanks to the enticing package that the young charismatic governor is presenting to them. He has clearly set a precedent and if only others could emulate him, then this country could be not so far from the likes of South Africa and Brazil.

CECAFA is finally here and the governor of Machakos is not to be left behind. It has taken him three weeks to renovate the Machakos stadium and ensure it is ready for at least three matches that are part of the CECAFA tourney. His speed and precision has been lauded by the FKF chairman, Sam Nyamwea, and the Sports Cabinet Secretary, Hassan Wario, who went ahead to add that the government will conduct a study to know how fast it takes to develop a world class stadia.

Looking at his track record, the man might not be a politician but he truly knows his job. He came in as a first timer and his credentials were only but on paper yet he has stood out as one who clearly deserves to lead a people destined for greater heights. And with good reports come rivals who are hell bent on distracting one’s progress; Dr. Mutua is one man who has a house full of rivals and this will not stop any time soon.
