Governor Akaranga to fly two flags, retain 'His Excellency' title
24 February 2015, 10:32
Vihiga - Vihiga Governor, Moses Akaranga will now fly two flags on his official vehicle after he launched the county flag, even as the row over use of titles among the County bosses continues.
Akaranga launched the County symbols which included the flag, court of arms and the seal, in what he said is fulfilling the constitutional mandate that stipulates that each County must have its symbols so as to be autonomous.
He said that the move by Parliament to strip the Governors and MCAs off their titles is unconstitutional and that they will challenge it in court if the President goes ahead to ascend to the Act.
“The 11th Parliament has lost direction and is using the House as a forum to cut powers given to Governors by the constitution that wananchi overwhelmingly voted for and we will not allow them to go ahead with their sinister scheme,” he said.
He urged Parliament to redirect their energy on passing Bills that would be of direct benefit to the suffering Kenyans.

“It beats logic for some of them to engage in early campaigns for the Governor’s seat and at the same time use their powers in the House to water down the same office,” he said.
Akaranga said that the colours that make up the flag are a true reflection of the County and very significant to the society.
“Our people have a history associated with peace among themselves and neighbours. Our culture is diverse and our County flag which we are launching today has colours related to ourselves and the features therein are a symbol of our values,” said Akaranga.
He said that the County is one of the counties associated with peace and hard work and that is well illustrated in the white colour of the County flag.
“Agriculture being the cornerstone of our County, I would wish to evoke the green and brown colours of our County flag which denote the environment of the County alongside the tapped and untapped resources and the rich land we inherited from our fore fathers,” he said.
He noted that Vihiga is a home of great opportunities and resources both natural and human and can only be exploited through commitment and initiatives as espoused in the Golden yellowish colour of the flag.
The Governor also noted that the County symbols that have been launched must be respected and used as per the Symbols Act.
Under the Act, the Governor, deputy governor and the speaker of the County Assembly will be allowed to fly the flag on their official vehicles.
