Gor Mahia face AFC in KPL Top 8 tournament

23 February 2012, 15:29 John Maigwa

Old age and bitter rivals Gor Mahia and AFC leopards will renew their rivalry when they face off in the first match of the second edition of the KPL Top 8 Knockout tournament. The draw for the tournament was conducted on Tuesday morning at a Nairobi hotel.

Opposite to the expectations of many who wished that the two would meet in the finals of the tourney, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards who were seeded in different pots will now meet in the first match.

The Top 4 finishers in last years’ league were seeded in one pot while the teams between fifth and eigth were seeded differently. The Top 8 Knock out tournament will be in its second edition and will involve teams that finished in the first 8 positions of the league last season.

Gor Mahia were eliminated in the semis last year by Ulinzi Stars while AFC Leopards will be making a debut in the tournament this year after failing to finish within the top 8 bracket in the 2010 League.

Defending Champions Ulinzi Stars will meet Chemelil Sugar in the last group phase match. Sofapaka will meet Sony Sugar while KPL Champs Tusker FC will meet Rangers who are also making a debut in the tournament.

The tournament which will stary in March will be played on Wednesday nights and it is a “lose and go” tournament. The winner takes it all, with one million shillings and a trophy at stake. Teams outside Nairobi will be flown in for match days with the KPL taking care of all the financial liabilities of the tournament. They will also pay the players’ allowances.
