Give rapists condoms, women advised

15 May 2015, 18:25 Godfrey Olukya

Kampala - A cross section of men have attacked a female activist who has advised girls and married women to always carry condoms in their purses or pockets.

Betty Kanyaruzu, while addressing women of Kisenyi suburb near Kampala said that modern girls and married women should always have condoms especially while walking alone at night.

" We should learn to guard ourselves. Many men rape women especially at night. If a man attempts to rape you when you have a condom, you give it to him to use so that he does not infect you with HIV-AIDs or any other venereal diseases, " said Kanyaruzu.

She added that if rapists resist to use condoms, the women should lie to them that they are infected with HIV-AIDs virus and if they do not want to get infected, they should use a condom.

" I survived being raped twice when I gave the condoms to those who wanted to rape me and  told them that I was positive yet I am not. They all abandoned the mission saying it was crazy to rape an HIV-Aids victim, "she added.

However some married men have attacked her for being immoral. They fear that what she is teaching their wives will make them turn into crooks.

" How can you advise married women to walk around with condoms. The married women may learn bad habits and start sleeping with other men protecting themselves with condoms," said Sam Isabirye, 39.

Duncan Lule, 57 said that Kanyaruzu should be arrested and charged for mis-advising married women.

" She is misguiding our women. First of all why should they walk at night in places where they are likely to be raped? And who told her that rapists have time to wear condoms?," he posed.

Anastasia Namuli, however supported her fellow women saying that whoever brings any idea which can save lives of others is not only good hearted but also patriotic.
