A 10-year-old girl was killed on Wednesday morning by armed cattle rustlers who raided Kieni village in Laikipia West sub-county and made away with 15 goats.
Confirming the incident, deputy police boss Patrick Makokha said the raiders were being pursued after being spotted at Kaptuya area.
He said that the rustlers have been giving area security agents sleepless nights over the last two months.
Makokha said that the cattle rustlers have been attacking and killing residents and stealing their animals, adding that the issue requires political goodwill from the neighboring counties for an amicable solution.
According to Githiga ward county representative Peter Thomi, unknown number of cattle rustlers raided the village at around 1.00 am where they shot at the house where the girl was sleeping instantly killing her.
Thomi said that the bandits believed to be from Baringo County, dashed into the homestead and sprayed bullets anyhowly.
“In the process, Joyce Muthoni, a class six pupil at Mbogoini Primary School was shot,” said Thomi.
“Several people in this area have been killed and scores injured in the last one week by cattle rustlers,” he complained.
The body was taken to Nyahururu district hospital mortuary.
Security and home affairs committee chairman in the Laikipia County assembly who is also Olmoran ward county representative Dan Ndegwa urged the central government to deploy Kenya police reservists in the area.
He said that the police reservists in the neighbouring Samburu, Isiolo and Baringo Counties have managed to contain cattle rustling.
The two local leaders also decried poor road networks in the area, which they said hinder efforts to pursue the stolen animals.
Early this month, the fifteen members of Laikipia County assembly had urged the national government to give them licenses so as to acquire guns following increased cases of insecurity in the county.
