Kwale - Properties worth over KES 3 million were destroyed on Wednesday evening after an inferno razed Wasini Mpunguti Lodge Hotel at Wasini Island in Msambweni district.
The Wednesday evening fire incident is said to have destroyed 50 hotel rooms, according to Beach Management Unit chair in Shimoni, Ahamed Abubakar.
Abubakar said that their neighbour was burning garbage next to the hotel when strong winds blew the fire to the hotel setting it ablaze.
“Other houses near the hotel also caught fire and three of them were razed after fire overwhelmed residents who tried to put it off unsuccessfully because of the strong wind," he said.
Marine police, in collaboration with local residents, later managed to put off the fire before it could spread to other residential houses next to the hotel.
The Hotel owner, Abdul Masoud, said the hotel will remain closed until further notice.
He said that eight tourist who had already booked rooms were forced to cancel bookings after the incident.
Msambweni Administration Police commander, Wilson Gichuhi, confirmed the incident and said that four German tourists lost everything including their travel documents.
He said some of the things destroyed during the inferno included personal goods, credit cards and unknown amount of cash which the tourists - Leon Vionon DerBurg, Kachia Barm Bold, Tabiea and Laura - had left in the hotel before it caught fire.
However, Gichuhi said that no one was injured during the incident noting that marine officers and locals later managed to put off the fire.
