Nairobi - Garissa University College attackers had prior access to the institution as they had a room in which ammunition was kept for replenishing.
According to police sources, the attackers had a room in which they had ammunition to sustain the over 12 hour attack which saw 148 people killed.
The source added that the attackers had help from inside the university to help them set up their plot.
" We now know that they had the weaponry and ammunition from inside to help them because the attack lasted over 12 hours. They must have had some help," the official that did not want to be named said.
Survivors of the attack said that they heard the attackers call out for more ammunition in clear Swahili.
" I heard them ask where the ammunition room was. It was scary to know that they had alot of ammunition, a survivor Amos Nyambisi told News24.
Police say that they are hopeful of finding out who the attackers' inside contact was and that they had a number of leads.
" We have a number of leads that we are following but we have an idea who the contact was and are catching up with him," the officer added.
148 people were killed in the attack, some of who were killed a number of hours into the attack with police help yet to arrive for the hostages.
Many of the dead were asked to lie down then shot on the head by the attackers after being rounded up.
