Gang kills driver, gets away with money

24 December 2012, 13:17Tony karomo

An armed gang over the weekend shot and killed a truck driver before escaping with an unknown amount of money along the Kianjai-Mikinduri road in Tigania West district.

Confirming the incident, Tigania West police boss Moses Kipyegon said the robbers accosted the driver and his two turn boys, grabbed the money they were carrying and escaped on an unmarked motorbike.

He said the three were armed with an AK-47 rifle during the 1.30pm incident that happened near the district headquarters.

The police boss said the driver and his crew were traveling from Miathene market after ferrying shop supplies.

“The driver and the turn boys were on their way back to Meru when they were ambushed by the robbers. The driver was shot and died on the spot while the rest managed to jump out of the moving vehicle,”he said.

Kipyegon said the police are yet to make any arrests or recover the weapons adding that they had launched investigations and were pursuing crucial leads.

He appealed business people to ask for police escort whenever transporting huge amounts of cash to stem cases of  theft.

“The police are ready and willing to offer escort services to those having large sums of cash in transit. This way we are going to avert such cases in the future,”the OCPD said.

He called on members of the public to volunteer information to the police to help in apprehending the criminals.

Kipyegon further urged the area residents to cooperate with the police in the fight against crime in the region.
