GNU candidate’s home torched

20 February 2013, 15:07James Kabotia

A GNU candidate in Laikipia is living in fear after her animals were completely gutted down by a ranging inferno on Wednesday morning.

Veronica Muthoni Ikunyua who is contesting for the Nanyuki Ward representative seat told the media at her home in Nturukuma village that an enormous fire razed down her 10 goats, 10 sheep and 500 bales of hay.

Muthoni said that on that material morning, she had left home for a meeting in Nanyuki town leaving behind her nephew Raphael Mawira who was busy preparing biogas in the compound.

She said that at around 8pm, she was called by her neighbors on her mobile phone saying that her house was on fire.

Muthoni who is running for the ward representative post on a GNU ticket suspects that some of her opponents sent arsonists to burn her house.

“I have no grudges with anyone but I suspect that my opponents want to totally discourage me from vying because they have realized that I am in the winning team,” said the angered Muthoni.

The scene was blood curdling as the burnt animals lay on the ground and the animal shelters had been brought down to ashes.

The blaze also burnt part of her house but the Nanyuki Municipal fire brigadiers together with her neighbors managed to put it off in time.

She insisted that arsonists torched the animal shed causing her a loss of over KES 350 000, adding that the Kenya Power and Lightening Company officers confirmed that there was no electric fault.

“I want to tell my competitors that I will still soldier on. I will be careful because they have proofed to me that this is a male dominated race,” observed Muthoni.

“When the fire started, I was preparing biogas in the garden. I hurriedly tried to break the shelters down but the huge fire threw me down and I fainted. When I recovered, I raised an alarm but nothing was salvaged. All the animals died as we watched at them desperately,” said Mawira.
