Shock and disbelief engulfed the residents of Wasio Village, Namuvila Sub-Location, which is at the border of Cheptais and Bungoma West Districts when they woke up on Thursday morning to find a badly mutilated lifeless body of a 10-year-old girl.
According to the parents of the girl, the class three pupil reportedly went missing after school on Wednesday. Her body was later found near River Toski with the left hand chopped off and showing signs of rape.
A suspect, Babu Simiyu, who is her step brother and who the Police officers tried to arrest, was subjected to mob justice by angry members of the public who were baying for his blood.
Residents who lynched the suspect followed a blood trail from where the body of the deceased was dumped, leading them to the middle-aged man's house. The missing hand and a blood-stained machete were found in his house.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Cheptais Police Station, before Police officers transferred them to Webuye District Mortuary.
Cheptais OCS Joyce Mutisya confirmed the incident saying investigations have been launched. She urged members of the public not to take the law into their hands.
