Nyeri - Police officers in Karatina town, Nyeri County have shot dead four suspected thugs while one escaped unhurt.
The four men who were in a private car were shot near Brookfield Academy School, along Sagana-Karatina-Nyeri road.
Area OCPD, Mathews Gwiyo said the thugs had robbed a wholesale store in Kagio town, Kirinyaga county of KES 70 000.
The owner of the store, Elias Muriithi Karani said the said thugs raided his shop at around 9am, where they ordered the workers to lie down before looting.
“They later escaped with a blue Nissan Sunny car but one of my workers managed to record the registration number of the car which we later forwarded to police as we recorded statements,” said Karani.
He also revealed that Ndia OCPD, Chemonges Ndiema went to his shop to interrogate the workers.
Speaking at the scene of crime, Ndiema said the thugs had fired in the air to instill Kagio town residents with fear and pave way for their escape.
His Karatina counterpart, Mathews Gwiyo said the thugs were killed following a shootout with police officers.
He said police, both administration and regular officers, were dispatched following a tip from members of the public and officers in Kirinyaga County.
Gwiyo said police recovered several rounds of ammunition, two AK47 guns and mobile phone SIM cards.
He further noted that police are in pursuit of the suspected thug who managed to escape.
