Nyeri - Police arrested four people who tried to defraud an old man of KES 40,000 in Nyeri town.
The four, two women and two men were arrested at one of Equity Bank branches trying to defraud the old man who had just deposited the money at the bank.
They asked him to withdraw the money so that they could ‘pray’ for him to double the amount.
They had traveled from Thika in a personal car for the botched mission.
Kairu said they wanted to conduct the 'prayers' near a church.
The bank manager John Mwangi who knew the client well wondered why Kairu wanted to withdraw the money 30 minutes after he had deposited and he had been accompanied by a stranger.
Mwangi then called the police who arrested the fraudsters.
The manager said the alleged tricksters were well dressed in suits and ties in order to lure unsuspecting clients.
Business came to a standstill at the busy town as Nyeri residents jammed the scene baying for their blood.
Police had a rough time to control the crowd with some cocking their guns before they were bundled into a police car to Nyeri Divisional Police station where they were locked up.
Police searched their car and recovered twelve mobile phones.
