Four perish in Bungoma motorcycle accident

15 July 2014, 15:15 Arap Yego

Bungoma - Four people perished in a motorcycle accident that occurred along the Webuye-Malaba Highway in Bungoma on Monday afternoon.

The four, a boda boda rider and his three passengers died on the spot after the motorbike they had boarded veered off the road near Matisi shopping centre.

Police blamed the grisly accident on overloading and overspeeding as the rider who was allegedly on a high speed reportedly lost control of the motorcycle as he negotiated a sharp corner near River Nzoia.

Webuye East OCPD Willy Simba who confirmed the incident  said it occurred because of overloading  and cautioned boda boda operators in the region against carrying more than one passenger on their motorcycles.

He also asked the operators to follow basic road traffic rules for their own safety and that of the passengers.

“Such deaths are preventable. If the rider had carried one passenger and both of them had helmets, maybe we could not have lost four innocent lives as he could have easily controlled his motorcycle,” said Simba.

He said they will carry out a crackdown in the area soon to nab those who will be found to have flouted the traffic rules.

“ I am also appealing  to members of the public not to accept to board a motorcycle that is already carrying another person for their own safety,” he added.

The four bodies were taken to Webuye  District Hospital Mortuary.
