Form two student drowns while fetching water

26 February 2015, 20:49

Nairobi - A form two student at St. Jonathan Secondary School in Rongo, Migori County died after he slipped into River Kuja.

The victim identified by police as Michael Otieno, accidentally fell into the fast moving river as he fetched water.

Rongo administration police commandant, David Ng’etich said the body was recovered on Tuesday evening and transferred to Rap Com Mortuary for preservation.

“The body was fished out of the river more than 24 hours after he drowned,” he said.

The school’s Principal, Mrs. Jackline Otieno called for leaders to assist the school put up a stone wall to save students from falling into the river which closely bordered the school.

“The river poses a great danger to the school population since our buildings hang precariously next to the river banks without anything concrete wall separating them,” she moaned.

She said the deceased, who was staying with the relative teacher within the school compound, had gone to fetch water from the river when he fell into it. Most schools in the region depend on the river as a source of water.

The incident brings to three the number of deaths that have happened in the river in the last five months.
