Form two student dies while procuring abortion

19 November 2013, 16:58 Oduor Omondi

Migori - A form two student died while undergoing treatment at Migori District Hospital after a failed attempt to procure an abortion.

The 17-year old Lwala Mixed Secondary School student took unknown drugs that caused her to bleed profusely while at home. She was then rushed to the hospital where she died while undergoing treatment.

Kawere sub-Location assistant chief, Charles Omondi, said the parents took her to the hospital in critical condition after she was seen taking unknown concoctions.

Uriri OCPD, Daniel Mutie, said police have arrested people suspected to be behind the abortion. He said some family members were involved.

He has directed area criminal investigation officer, Festus Kiambi, to dig into the matter as the culprits are waiting to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.

He has however appealed to the public and parents to avoid quack doctors while seeking any form of medication. He said abortion is illegal except when done in line with the Kenyan constitution which only allows it under specific medical conditions.

He said abortion may result in losing both the mother and the child adding that young pregnant girls should be left to give birth and proceed with their education thereafter.
