Namanga - A 7-year-old child died after flash floods swept Namanga town on Saturday evening.
The child was swept away together with his mother by the raging waters. His mother was rescued while the child’s body was recovered by Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) search and rescue team from Kajiado branch.
The floods were reported in the town following heavy down pour that lasted more than six hours on Saturday evening.
A statement from Kenya Red Cross Society said River Namanga burst its banks leaving at least one thousand residents displaced.
The floods also caused heavy damages to property.
Locals accused the local county government and a Chinese contractor of blocking drainage at a bridge while constructing a road.
“The contractor left without finishing the work. He blocked the bridge and diverted water to be flowing to homesteads,” said one of the residents.
