Vihiga - Five children have died while one is nursing serious injuries after being struck by lightning.
The six children were playing at St. Luke’s High School Lumakanda in Lugari Kakamega County Thursday evening when the tragedy occurred.
Confirming the incident, Lugari OCPD Benard Macharia said the six children who were aged between 7 and 13 years were sheltering under a tree in the school playing ground in an attempt to protect themselves from heavy rain that was pounding the area.

“The six boys were among other children who were playing football but decided to take shelter under a tree when the rains began before they were struck by lightning at about 5pm. Five of them died on the spot while the lucky one was rushed to Lumakanda Hospital in a critical condition,” said Macharia.
The boys are said to have been pupils from different primary schools in the area who are on August recess.
The OCPD appealed to area residents to avoid sheltering under trees when it is raining and at the same time asked parents to take care of their children during this holiday season.
The bodies have been transferred to Chebaiywa Mission Hospital mortuary.
