Five elderly people die of cold

Nyeri - At least five elderly people in Nyeri County have passed on due to cold related diseases in the months of June and July.
According to statistics from Purity Elderly Care Foundation (PECF), four of them are from Kieni sub-county while the fifth one is from Thunguma, Nyeri town.
PECF director, Joyce Wanjiku Kairu attributed the elders' deaths to stigma and neglect by family members and community.
Wanjiku also noted that an incalculable number of elderly people are hospitalised for the same diseases.
The months of June, July and August Mt Kenya region is usually cold.
Speaking at Munyange chief’s camp in Othaya after donating blankets and foodstuffs to local elderly people, Wanjiku said the elderly need a lot of care and attention during the cold season.
She gave out goods worth more than KES 50 000 to elderly persons drawn from Mahiga location, noting that scores of senior citizens were suffering from diseases such as pneumonia, arthritis and fever among others.
She further asked the community to take the burden to attend to those close to them.
“By giving the elderly blankets and foodstuffs, we are demonstrating to the local community that senior citizens need to be taken care of during the cold season,” said Wanjiku while pointing out that the aged ought to live with dignity whatsoever.
PECF supports vulnerable old people through support of donations and sponsorships from well wishers.
