Fishermen attack investor over disputed land

There was tension at Mayungu village in Malindi district when fishermen and locals attacked hired workers of a certain Investor who were erecting perimeter fence at a disputed land on Thursday.
Chaos broke out when the hired workers by Mr. Daniel Ricci started to prepare to fence off the disputed land but fishermen and locals vowed not to allow the land to be fenced off claiming it was public and fishermen landing site.
The angry fishermen and locals descended on workers with clubs ordering them to leave the place as quickly as possible since the land belonged to them and not the tycoon who claimed he had title of the land.

Several workers were injured during the incident as they ran away to escape the anger of fishermen and locals.
The disputed land plot number 427, Mr. Daniel Ricci the Investor through his lawyer Mr. Mohamed Kilelo claims to obtain the land legally and wondered why some youths were being used to disrupt developments activities at the land.
Mr. Kilelo told journalists that the investor had complied with all requirements by leaving 60 meters riparian land where fishermen and locals can be able to access the beach.

 “We sat down and agreed with them before by leaving their landing site but now we don’t know whey some people have come out to stop our client from working on his own land,” he said.
He however ruled out possibilities of the incident being politically fueled by some peoples in the area.
“I think there are some people who have been politically pushed to demonstrate despite the fact that we had agreed before,” he noted.
Malindi district Commissioner Mr. Joshua Nkanatha confirmed the incident and that he sent his officers at the area to maintain peace and order.
“There are some workers who were injure during the incident but I sent my officers so that they can maintain law and order to avoid more injuries at the area,” said Mr. Nkanatha.
